DSA Theory Test for Lorry and Bus
After applying for the precise provisional entitlement and submitting medical report, DSA requires drivers to pass a theory test to examine and evaluate their driving knowledge and skill. A successful completion of this test makes eligible a driver to undergo driving training for LGV/HGV/PCV.
The theory test includes two parts:
• Multiple Choice
• Hazard Perception
A driver can take these tests in whatever he wants to. But the maximum time period allowed between the first and the second is 2 years, to attain the certificate.

Multiple Choices:

• At the start, a driver is provided with instruction on how to attempt the test. A practice session is also provided to get a look over of the questions laid out, and digital format used.
• After the start of the test session, questions with multiple answer options will appear on the screen, the driver has to choose the correct one out of these with mouse or touch screen. Some questions may carry more than one correct answer.
• The total number of questions asked is 100, and the time period allowed is 115 minutes.
• Each question carries 1 mark.
• The passing eligibility for Multiple Choice test section is 85 marks out of 100.
• The pass mark for the multiple choice part of the theory test is 85 out of 100.

Hazard Perception:

• This test includes video clip presentation of about 19 videos featuring every day road scenes.
• The clips featured have at least one hazard involved, while in one of the clips the developing hazard value is 2.
• The driver has to respond in a quick time to predict the developing hazard. The quicker the response, more are the marks allotted, with maximum 5 marks for each clip.
• The pass mark for the Hazard Perception part of the theory test is 67 out of 100.
The theory test certificate, after successful completion of the test, is valid for two years, during which a driver has to undergo the practical test, else his certificate stands void.
The theory test marks are required for applying to practical test afterwards.
In case of failure, one must retake the test after a gap of 3 working days. It is recommended by DSA that drivers should book their tests in advance (at a length of 2-3 weeks) as per the busy test booking schedule.

DSA Practical Test for Lorry and Bus

In the process of attaining professional driver certification from DSA for HGV/LGV, a driver has to undergo DSA authorized practical test after completion of their driving training course.

During this module of practical test, the examiner checks various parameters of a driver while plying on-road, such as:
• Vehicle control
• Moving the vehicle at angles
• Control and movement while moving downhill and uphill
• Braking control
• Effectual use of mirrors: front and rear
• Use of apt road signals
• Managing and controlling the speed during the travel progression
• Anticipation of other driver’s movement and showing full awareness towards it
• Safety level
• Dealing with crisis or hazardous situation
• Picking the most safe and suitable place to stop
It involves giving 10 minutes of free run to the driver to gauge their safety parameters, control and decision at their own.

Driving measures off-road:

This test involves drivers who are taking the test with a trailer. This off-road exercise lets a driver conduct uncoupling and re-coupling practice into a cove, with an S-shaped reversing.

Result:

The examiner, after the practical test, tells the driver if he has passed the test or not. This does not include any specific mark system, like the theory test; but a conclusive practical measurement by the examiner. Passed drivers get certified license from DSA to work professionally as HGV/LGV drivers across the nation.
For candidates who fail, they can re-appear in the practical test after a gap of 3 working days.

Dangerous Goods Driver Training

An ADR qualification is must for carrying out transportation of large containers containing dangerous goods, chemicals, and hazardous materials.
Mode of dangerous goods transportation:
• In Packages or in loose bulk
• In Tanks

ADR License:

A professional driver needs to have an ADR driving license photo identification card for carrying out transportation of dangerous goods throughout the nation. This certification can be obtained specifically for wither packaged goods or for tanks. This license is attained after successfully undergoing ADR approved training course.
Individual drivers and companies have to strictly adhere to all the regulations and conditions for safe transportation of dangerous goods.
ADR license is valid for 5 years, after which the drivers need to undergo a refresher training course for their ADR license renewal.

ADR qualification Classes:

There are three classes defined under ADR:
Core: This qualification class entails learning structure for passage of dangerous goods as loose (in bulk), through tank containers, drums, tankers, cylinders.
Packages: This mode equips a driver with the skills for carrying dangerous good’s packages, such as cartons, sacks, drums etc. It also includes passage of dangerous materials as loose in bulk; like skips, cart bodies, etc.

Dangerous Goods Classes:

There are 9 defined classes of dangerous goods, as per ADR guidelines:
1. Explosives
2. Gases: All the compressed, liquefied and those which are dissolved under pressure.
3. Flammable liquids
4. Flammable solids: which are prone to spontaneous incineration
5. Organic peroxides and Oxidizing substances
6. Infectious and harmful toxic materials
7. Radioactive substances
8. Corrosive materials, like Alkalis and Acids
9. Miscellaneous substances like asbestos, PCBs, etc.

ADR Training:

• An initial course is conducted for the drivers who are opting for the ADR license for the first time.
• Courses vary as per different classes, and so different class category entails different course size, duration and structure.

ADR Examination:

SQA conducts the examination for ADR license. The examination is conducted based on a multiple choice format. The examination is conducted on a dual system: On paper, and on computer.
Successful completion of the examination certifies a driver to carry the passage of dangerous goods materials, and is provided the certificate by DVLA.

Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGCA):

DGCA conducts various functions for safe and secure on-road passage of dangerous goods such as:
• Giving advice to the employer or drivers on various parameters of dangerous goods safety
• They routinely monitor the strict adherence of law
• Preparation of annual reports of employer’s procedures
• Investigation of accident or emergencies and compilation of related reports
